Get to know

Matt Johnson grew up riding horses in Central Vermont and attended the University of Vermont. A Dean’s list student, in 1992 he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science with a concentration in Small Business Management. The following winter Matt Johnson made his first trek south to Wellington with his horse to work and train with top Olympic riders. For 5 years he did what many clients do, spending summers up north and winters in Wellington. In 1998 he made the decision to make Wellington his permanent year-round home and enter the real estate business. Since then, he hasn’t looked back. Consistently, year after year, Matt has been one of Wellington’s top-producing agents representing some of the community’s finest estates and equestrian properties. Over the development of his 25-year career, Matt has worked at some of the best firms both locally and internationally, notably, Illustrated Properties, Sotheby’s and Engel & Volkers. Regardless of the brokerage, Matt has always been a top producer of sales with each brand and consistently ranked on Newsweek’s America’s Best and The One-thousand. In 2022 he ranked 11th at the global firm of Engel & Volkers for the United States and Canada. He is always looking to raise the bar and provide the best exposure and service to his customers. Along with the traditional sales approach, Matt has a proven track record of success with luxury real estate auctions with some of Wellington’s most prestigious properties.

Active dressage rider and competitor

Top Equestrian

Matt’s competitive nature doesn’t end in the office. He is an active dressage rider and competitor. He trains with 6-time Olympian and former USA Olympic team coach, Robert Dover.  He also spent two years training under the guidance of Olympic rider & the most recent coach of the USA Olympic Team, Debbie McDonald, on his current Grand Prix stallion, Petersborg’s Qasanova (Quarterback x Calypso II). Matt imported Qasanova in 2013 as 4-year-old, and 2014 the pair went on to be the top ranked USA horse and rider combination for five-year-olds and the sole representatives for the USA at the World Championships for young horses in Verden, Germany.  Matt is also training his up-and-coming dressage horse of sought after bloodlines, the 5-year-old gelding, Nightfall (Furstenball x Negro).

It’s clear, Matt’s energy and determination for success shine through in both the real estate and competition arenas. He recognizes the two-go hand in hand, and he builds on those relationships. Clearly, he not only understands the equestrian lifestyle, but he also lives it.
